I have fought hard to survive through and then overcome chronic depression, anxiety, postnatal depression, panic disorder and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Part of this journey has seen me overcome myriad health obstacles. I am no longer morbidly obese, having lost over 25 kgs. I am one year sober and proud to be a non smoker.
As part of my journey to wellness I have thrown myself into running which is good for my mental health and gives me a sense of challenge, freedom and achievement. I am undertaking the Run Melbourne's Runners World 'Half Marathon' challenge to raise awareness and vital funds for mental health support. My efforts will combat stigma that still exists and impacts people in the community today.
I am a passionate believer that we need to do everything possible to reduce Australian suicide rates which are preventable through resourcing, community effort, acceptance of mental health challenges and involvement in working towards eradicating isolation. I'm pounding the pavement in an effort to decrease discrimination for those experiencing mental health challenges and their circles of support.
My vision is for extra resourcing and an increase in vital services provided by Beyond Blue to ensure they are always available to those who suffer mental health issues. Having accessed some of these services myself, I am a firm beleiver in their power. Without them I may not have survived to tell my own tale of relative recovery.
Now that I have acquired some strength through adversity of my own personal battles I want to advocate from a lived experience perspective for others who are still suffering, 'at risk' or in need of direct service access. Please help make a difference by contributing to my campaign. I pledge to do the training and complete my second ever half marathon (of 21.1kms). AND if you dig deep and support me I know that together we can help change and even save lives!!
